We love the city of Sheffield, it has so much history and so much of interest for the visitor that people love coming back again and again.
The Steel Industry, Hillsides, Beautiful Buildings and Nature
Sheffield is famous for it’s steel production and you’ll learn so much about its history and culture while you’re here. All around you are reminders of the past with beautifully built structures and famous landmarks. It also has a thriving theatre complex and music scene with many bands having gone on to be a success worldwide.
It is back in the 19th century that Sheffield grew as an industrial centre. Old buildings once used to house cutlery works or other factory business are now used for more delicate guests. They often house galleries, shops and artists studios, there’s the Botanical Gardens too where you can relax and unwind. The hillsides where there for the Victorians as a place of escape from the furnaces and smoke, and you can still escape uphill to hear the birds and relax for a while before entering the city once more.
The theatre is definitely recommended, and you’ll find there’s plenty of choice from the Lyceum, Crucible and Studio Theatres. These three are within easy reach of each other in Tudor Square in the centre of the city. There’s a wide range of performances on at these theatres, so there’s plenty of choice, with dance, drama and comedy.
Tropical Butterfly House Wildlife and Falconry Centre
If you fancy a bit of nature after that then the Tropical Butterfly House Wildlife and Falconry Centre is a good choice. It offers some gorgeous butterflies, bats, insects, otters, meerkats, snakes, owls, birds and crocodiles even, inside a carefully built indoor forest where you can spend time admiring the exotic and different before facing the outside world again.
A Museum That Tells You All You Need To Know
Finally, The Kelham Island will intrigue you with its industrial manmade island. It’s nearly a 1,000-year-old, and is an industrial museum with scientific and industrial documentation giving a wonderful overview of its history. There’s all sorts here, such as 19th century steam engines, photograph collections and reconstructed workshops.
